June 2026 update
Progress on the Brunstock BESS installed in Rothenburg, Switzerland
With an impressive output of 3.45 megawatts and a storage capacity of 5 megawatt hours, a Brunstock BESS has been installed by NRG Solutions AG. It opened after a key ceremony in June 2026.
‘With the battery storage system from NRG Solutions, we are making a contribution to stabilising the energy system while simultaneously unlocking new economic potential.’
—Marco Schiavini, CEO of SABAG Lucerne
Brunstock battery storage systems make an important contribution to grid stability. They absorb energy when there is too much electricity in the grid and release it within seconds when it is needed. In this way, they provide balancing energy and create the necessary flexibility for an electricity system with a growing share of renewable power generation.
Projects such as this one with SABAG AG show that sustainability and profitability are not a contradiction. Brunstock battery storage systems can open up new revenue opportunities and help to use existing infrastructure more efficiently.

March 2026 update
Progress on NRG Solutions AG’s BESS construction site at SABAG AG
The steel structure for the battery storage system is in place: an important step on the way to commissioning.
The storage container itself is currently still on its way by sea. In the meantime, the preparatory work continues on the construction site: foundation, infrastructure and integration into the existing energy supply.
The project demonstrates how our Brunstock battery storage system becomes a reality—step by step—from planning to implementation. The next steps will follow as soon as the storage container is on site.

SABAG AG developed an integrated energy system for its Rothenburg site
SABAG AG commissioned the development of an intelligent Brunstock energy system at its Rothenburg location, marking a strategic step towards greater energy resilience and long‑term operational efficiency. The project was delivered in collaboration with WWZ AG and NRG Solutions AG and included the installation of a megawatt‑scale battery storage system as the core asset.
The rollout was structured in phases to ensure stable integration with existing operations. The first phase focused on enabling the site to provide grid‑stabilising services. This established the control framework and communication pathways required for later expansion. The second phase introduces on‑site photovoltaic generation and charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. Once complete, the system will be configured for self‑consumption optimisation, allowing SABAG AG to use more of its own renewable energy and reduce exposure to grid volatility.
The installation brings together energy storage, grid services and renewable generation in a single coordinated system. By combining these elements, SABAG AG is building a flexible energy platform that supports operational continuity, reduces long‑term energy costs and contributes to regional grid stability.
