Not every energy storage project starts at 50 MWh. Some start south of 5 MWh. What matters is that the architecture lets you scale without redesigning the entire site. Brunstock’s BESS solutions are built on a modular foundation that allows operators to add capacity as demand grows, without stranding the original investment. That’s not flexibility for flexibility’s sake. It’s practical project economics for C&I and utility‑scale deployments alike.
A modular system from the cell upward
Brunstock’s 5 MWh liquid cooling BESS is engineered as a stackable, repeatable building block. Each container integrates long‑life LFP batteries, a three‑tier BMS, a thermal management system and an intelligent power distribution system in a standardised 20‑foot enclosure. The system uses 416S12P, which is configured with 104 cells per battery pack and 48 batteries, to create a consistent, repeatable module that can be deployed in multiples.
This consistency is what makes scaling straightforward. Whether you deploy one unit or twenty, each container behaves the same way electrically, thermally and operationally.
Battery cabinets designed for expansion
Inside each container, Brunstock uses industrial‑grade battery cabinets with modular racks and packs. The number of battery cabinets, integrated converter cabinets, and pre‑installed substation and EMS ports can be configured to meet the capacity required by each project. That means the system is not locked into a single configuration. It grows with the site.
Packet‑level detection, explosion venting and multi‑level warnings ensure that safety scales with capacity, not complexity.
Scalable thermal performance
Thermal management is often the limiting factor in multi‑container BESS deployments. Brunstock’s liquid cooling system is engineered to maintain a temperature difference within each rack of only 3 °C, which reduces power consumption by 40% compared to air cooling systems. This precision ensures that adding more containers doesn’t introduce thermal imbalance or degrade performance.
When you scale, your cooling strategy scales with you.
Pre‑engineered grid integration
Adding more storage shouldn’t require redesigning the grid interface. Brunstock’s step‑up transformer skid stations are prefabricated, pre‑tested and designed to integrate multiple BESS units. Our skid station includes a PCS, transformer, RMU and auxiliary systems, all delivered as a single engineered block.
Because the skid station is modular, sites can expand from a single BESS to a multi‑container array simply by adding additional DC inputs or additional skids. The 5 MWh central PCS configuration supports 1250 kW x 4, giving operators a predictable scaling pathway.
Practical site design for multi‑container layouts
Scaling isn’t just electrical. It’s civil. Brunstock provides clear spatial requirements for multi‑container installations, including trenching, cable routing and foundation design. When a Brunstock representative deploys one of our solutions, their local team includes line drawings of the Brunstock 5 MWh BESS layout and specifies the spacing required. This ensures that early‑stage projects don’t paint themselves into a corner. With enough discussion and forward-planning a site that starts with one container can even be expanded without reworking foundations, trenching or access.
Protecting your investment as you grow
Every Brunstock BESS is built to operate in harsh outdoor environments, with an IP55 enclosure, wide operating temperature range and robust fire detection and suppression. These features ensure that early installations remain reliable as the site grows, avoiding the stranded‑asset problem that plagues less modular systems.
The energy storage system is designed for outdoor installation with 0–100% relative humidity tolerance and −20 °C to + 45 °C operating temperatures. That means your first DC block will still be performing when you add your tenth within the warranty period.
Modularity that makes economic sense
Scaling energy storage shouldn’t require starting again. Brunstock’s modular BESS architecture gives operators a predictable, repeatable pathway from small C&I installations to multi‑MWh utility‑scale assets. It’s a system designed to grow with your project, your load profile and your business case.
Because flexibility isn’t a feature. It’s a strategy.
